the Main Salmon River

Idaho's "River of No Return", the Main Salmon, is the longest free-flowing river in the Lower 48. It travels west on its way to the Snake River and during this course cuts a path through the second deepest canyon in the United States.

Camping on the Main Salmon RiverWith warm water, fun roller-coaster rapids, and huge sandy beaches, it's no wonder why the Main Salmon is often considered one of the best family river trips around. Trips are generally five or six days in length and cover 86 miles. The gradient on the Main Salmon is around 12 feet per mile and river character is pool and drop. This means that after each rapid is a calm pool - the perfect place to jump out for a swim or simply take in the view. The Main Salmon is a high-volume river and the rapids feature giant waves or "haystacks" as they are sometimes called.

The river canyon is rich with history and it's common to see Sheepeater Indian pictographs, the famous "Buckskin Bill" lookout tower, and old cabins nestled in the woods. Camping is comfortable, especially on the huge beaches the Main Salmon has grown famous for. Idaho River Journeys, the company we use to run these trips, has a reputation for a fabulous menu. Not only are the campsites great, but the food can't be beat.

Rapids range from class II to class IV, with the most difficult two being "Big Mallard" and the mile-long "Elkhorn". Inflatable kayaks are available and a great treat for those looking to explore the river on their own.

Trips are five or six days in length and start at $1,495. For more information about these trips, or to reserve a date, call us at 541-203-0222.
