the Middle Fork of the Salmon
Ask any guide who has worked on rivers all over the world what the perfect week-long river trip would be and chances are good that these six words would come out of his or her mouth: "The Middle Fork of the Salmon." The Middle Fork of the Salmon offers the perfect combination of whitewater, fishing, and spectacular scenery to be claimed as the premier river trip in America.
For 100 miles the Middle Fork twists and turns, making its way North towards the confluence with the Main Salmon River. On its journey, the river drops over 2,600 feet in elevation, taking floaters through a wide array of landscapes and canyons.
The trip starts at Boundary Creek, about a 2 hour drive from the picturesque town of Stanley, Idaho, which is the hub spot for all Middle Fork trips. Once at Boundary Creek, boats are lowered down an impressive looking ramp, nearly 100 feet to the river. This marks the starting line for the Frank Church Wilderness Area, the largest wilderness area in the Lower 48 at 2.2 million acres.
Pushing off from Boundary Creek, floaters immediately encounter the continuous nature of the river. Dropping at 40 feet per mile, the Upper Middle Fork canyon keeps boaters busy dodging rocks and - at high water - huge hydraulics. The river for the first 20 miles feels more like a large creek, but tributaries consistently pour in more and more water adding to the flow.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon's Alpine Forest.
The green alpine forest surrounding the Middle Fork in this section offers a helping hand at the feeling of remoteness and pure-wilderness, something so rarely achieved in today's ever-connected world. Alas, out here there is no cell service, no email, and no television. The Middle Fork offers a chance to truly "let go" - for six days - with friends, family, and nature. A trip down the Middle Fork is not simply a week-long vacation, it is a life-changing experience. It is a splash of cold water in the face. It is a wake up call that there is more to life than our everyday routine.

Fly fishing is spectacular on the Middle Fork.
Despite the logistical challenges occompanied with a trip like this, Middle Fork outfitters have a developed an enviable reputation for providing superb accomodations, mouth-watering menus, and phenomenal customer service. Idaho River Journeys, the company we've partnered with to offer this incredible trip, tops the charts in all three of these categories.
